Pathologist awarded with over 50 scientific awards, creator of malaria’s vaccine

Manuel Elkin Patarroyo is a Colombian pathologist who made the world's first attempt to create a synthetic vaccine for malaria, a disease transmitted by mosquitoes that affects millions of people in tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of the America, Asia, and Africa. The vaccine was evaluated in clinical trials carried out by the World Health Organization in Gambia, Tanzania and Thailand. He is, also one of “Scientist whose dream of beating disease came true” selected by the English newspaper The Guardian.

Patarroyo studied medicine at the National University of Colombia. Later, he received a scholarship to continue his studies at Yale University. After that, he received his PhD from Rockefeller University in New York. At that time, he founded in Bogotá a small laboratory called Institute of Immunology, directed by himself. In 1978, they began their work with vaccines, in particular with a vaccine against malaria. It is a peptide cocktail (proteins) synthesized from principle to end in the laboratory by means of a chemical procedure and denominated scientifically as SPf66.
